DEFINATION:
 

Oligospermia is defined as diminished sperm count or sperm count below 20 million sperms per milliliter.
It's just only one sperm required to fertilize an egg (ovum) but chances of getting pregnant with just one sperm are very low thus low sperm count decreases the chances of getting your female partner pergnant.

CAUSES:

Main cause of oligospermia is not clear in many cases but some of the common causes are listed below.

Causes of temporary fall in sperm count

  • High Fever
  • Certain Drugs
  • Certain Poisons
  • Some hormonal conditions
  • Some severe illness
  • Smoking
  • Excessive intake of alcohol
  • Smoking
Causes of permanent fall in sperm count

  • Varicose veins around testes

  • Semen analysis.
  • Ultrasound to detect blockage in reproductive system.
  • Scrotal ultrasound to detect a varicocele or blocked epididymis.
  • Blood test for hormonal levels

COMPLICATION:

The only complication encountered is male infertility.
